Aimhigher National Award Winners

Two local students have received national recognition for their educational achievements at the National Aimhigher Awards, which took place in London on October 6th.

Hillside High pupil Roseanne Cliff and former Childwall School pupil Nimca Hassan beat off competition from young people from across the country to win the awards for their outstanding commitment and achievement over the last year.

The Rt Hon Pat McFadden, Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, presented Roseanne and Nimca with their awards at the ceremony, alongside education journalist and BBC news correspondent, Mike Baker.

Lynda O'Brien, Aimhigher Coordinator at Hillside High School in Bootle, who nominated Roseanne said: "Rosie is an inspiration to both staff and her peers and she contributes relentlessly to the life of the school. She has a happy, sunny personality and is vivacious, conscientious and outstanding pupil."

Jo McNeill of Aimhigher Greater Merseyside, who nominated Nimca commented "I feel Nimca fully deserves this award for maintaining such a high level of commitment throughout her involvement with her Aimhigher and I wish her luck as she begins her studies at university this year."

There were over 130 entries to the scheme this year, which celebrates the most successful and innovative Aimhigher work being undertaken across the country.

The awards for Roseanne and Nimca highlight the significance of the work that Aimhigher is doing in the area to help local youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds progress into higher education, by raising their aspirations and attainment.

Congratulations to Park High School, Wirral, Ellis Greenwood from Halton High School and Lynda O'Brien from Hillside High School in Bootle who were all shortlisted for awards.

Pat McFadden, Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, said:

"Aimhigher is a brilliant example of a programme that changes the lives of young people: it helps to give them the chance of a better future, and to realise their dreams and ambitions.

"I am pleased to be involved in the 2009 Awards, celebrating the hard work and dedication of those benefiting from Aimhigher and the staff who support them. It is heartwarming to read the stories of individuals who have won awards, some from very challenging circumstances.

"The Government is committed to pursuing social justice, which is why we have continued to expand the university system and explore ways to make it more accessible. I believe the future of higher education remains exceedingly bright for our young people."
